Project Quick Facts
Ground mount solar array
- Location: Eastington, Gloucestershire
- Installed: May 2025
- System: 14 x 450W Astronergy modules s, 20kWh battery storage, 6kW hybrid inverter
The Challenge
Decarbonising an All-Electric Home
The owners of Grove Barn faced a common challenge for modern rural properties: high dependency on the grid due to an all-electric heating system. With an Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP) already in place, the property was efficient but expensive to run, with electricity bills averaging £175 per month.
The goal was to integrate a renewable energy solution that could support the high-drain ASHP, reduce monthly overheads, and provide a buffer against fluctuating energy prices.
The Solution
High-Capacity Ground-Mount Solar & Storage
Because roof space or orientation isn't always optimal, Fit Solar designed a high-performance ground-mounted array. This allowed for perfect positioning to capture maximum sunlight throughout the day.
Grid Independence
By pairing a 6kW inverter with significant battery capacity, the system was configured to prioritise "Self-Consumption." The huge 20kWh Dyness stack acts as a reservoir, ensuring the Air Source Heat Pump runs primarily on stored solar power rather than expensive grid electricity.
Client Outcome
Grove Barn is now a model of modern rural efficiency. By utilising ground-mount technology and high-capacity storage, the owners have successfully "tamed" their all-electric bills while creating a sustainable, income-generating asset.
The Results
39% Grid Independence & Substantial Income
The transition to solar has radically altered the energy profile of Grove Barn, delivering immediate and long-term financial relief.
Financial Impact:
-
Bill Reduction: Monthly electricity costs plummeted from £175 down to just £75 a saving of £1,200 per year on bills alone.
-
SEG Income: The property is now earning approximately £375 per year via the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG).
-
Long-Term Gains: The SEG payments alone are projected to return £7,500 over 20 years, effectively acting as a secondary income stream.
-
Grid Independence: The property now boasts 39% grid independence, meaning nearly 40% of its total annual energy needs are met entirely on-site.
Environmental Impact
This system reduces 1.3 Tons of CO2 annually.
Over the system lifetime this equates to:
- 39,531 km of car distance avoided.
- 254 trees planted equivalent.
